The Medicine Hat Mavericks were never out of the fight Saturday night in Weyburn.
After allowing nine runs in the first inning, the Mavericks worked their way towards a comeback before ultimately falling 12-5 to the Beavers. Medicine Hat entered the contest on the heels of a 10-5 loss in Swift Current Friday night against the 57’s.
Weyburn scored their nine runs off Mavericks starter Nathan Stark who had two strikeouts in the first before handing the ball over to Zac Robinson.
He got the final out of the first inning and worked and 3.2 while only allowing two hits and striking out four. Jack Suhai entered the contest and pitched 1.1 innings with four strikeouts of his own.
The Mavericks opened their scoring with runs in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings. Designated hitter Hunter Cooper knocked in left fielder Christian Rush from third with a RBI sacrifice hit in the infield in the third inning. Shortstop Nate Ewing scored in the fourth on a hit from first basemen Hunter Boylan that caused a Weyburn error. Cooper knocked in another run with a sac fly in the fifth that allowed centre fielder Braden DeSonia from third to bring the Mavericks within 9-3.
The Mavericks added to their run totals in the seventh as Rush and DeSonia scored on an error by the Weyburn third basemen. Kam Richards came into the game in the seventh with the bases loaded and pitched the inning with a strikeout. Weyburn scored three runs in the frame to grow their lead to 12-5.
Medicine Hat catcher Zach Stark came into the game in the sixth inning in right field and found himself on the mound to start the eighth frame. The Medicine Hat product registered three strikeouts in his season debut on the mound as he held Weyburn off the bases.
The Mavericks weren’t able to scratch across any runs in the ninth as Weyburn held on for the 12-5 win. Medicine Hat(16-34) are back in Weyburn Sunday night for a 7:05 p.m. contest rematch with the Beavers
