How about another comeback! The Mavericks once again pulled victory from the jaws of defeat after overcoming a 5-run deficit last night. Weyburn had the Mavs on the ropes early on, but after a series of home runs from Carter Roth, Jeremy Freeman Jr., and Blake Dale, Medicine Hat climbed ahead. Luke Barrientos would shut the door in the 9th, giving the Mavs a series sweep over the Beavers.
This evening, the Mavericks renew their rivalry with the Moose Jaw Miller Express, who come into town for the 3rd time this season.
Despite their record being below .500, the Miller Express have one of the more intriguing offences in the WCBL. Led by now 3-time all-star Austin Gurney, the Millers have had no problem driving in runs, being fourth in the WCBL. Thomas Soto and William Edwards played a role in Moose Jaw’s offensive firepower, with Edwards being second in the league in RBIs and Soto batting over .300.
Another pleasant surprise within the Miller’s lineup has been infielder Ben Waliczek. The Indiana State product has had one of the best eyes at the plate in 2025, with just 7 strikeouts all season. His ability to work walks has also been impressive, tallying 29 free passes.
Gary Dornan will be tasked with shutting down Moose Jaw’s big dogs this evening. Dornan hasn’t had the perfect season by any means, but the experiences he has gained throughout his first WCBL season have been valuable.
As the only affiliate player on the Mavericks roster, Dornan has been able to learn from a crop of veterans who have taken him under their wing. With that, his confidence and skills have grown tremendously, giving the Mavs’ coach more and more trust in the young pitcher. He and the rest of his Maverick counterparts will have their eyes on the prize as they look to take down the Moose Jaw Miller Express for the 2nd time in 2025.
There is one unique twist to today’s game, with the WCBL announcing their 2025 All-Star nominations. The Mavericks saw pitchers Luis Diaz and Xander Roberts selected alongside position players Carter Roth, Tyler Vanneste, and Jeremy Freeman Jr. Moose Jaw had Austin Gurney, Thomas Soto, Westin Walls, William Edwards, Rudy Guardiola, and Nathan Pisio chosen from their group.
It should be a cold one from Athletic Park as Moose Jaw looks to continue to chase down the second-place Mavs in an East Division battle. It all begins at 7:05 pm in Medicine Hat, Alberta.
