The Medicine Hat Mavericks organization is proud to announce the launch of a new high-performance program. Mavericks Varsity, designed to give high school baseball players from Medicine Hat, southern Alberta and Saskatchewan, the opportunity to train, develop, and compete at the highest level while staying close to home.
For over 20 years, the Mavericks have been a cornerstone of the baseball community in Medicine Hat through our summer collegiate team competing in the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL). With the launch of Mavericks Varsity, our leadership team is expanding our development pathway to support local & regional talent and provide a clear next step for athletes with ambitions to play college baseball and beyond.
A Commitment to Local Baseball:
“This program is about giving kids from Medicine Hat and surrounding area a chance to grow, compete, and get noticed.” said Greg Morrison. “The Mavericks have always been about building community through baseball, and Mavericks Varsity is the next step in that mission.”
Program Highlights:
- Player Eligibility: Open to high school athletes (Grades 10-12) in Medicine Hat and southern Alberta/Saskatchewan.
- Competition: The program will compete against other regional programs and academies.
- Season Structure: Runs September 1 to April 30, featuring games plus tournaments, practices, and skill development sessions.
- Facilities: Practices and home games will be hosted at Athletic Park.
- Coaching Staff: Led by Program Director Greg Morrison, whose experience includes 12 years of professional baseball (Toronto Blue Jays, LA Dodgers) as well as 7 selections to Team Canada’s Men’s and Junior National Teams. Supported by assistant coaches and specialized instructors in pitching, hitting, mental performance and strength & conditioning.
- Player Development: Comprehensive focus on fundamentals, advanced skill training, strength & conditioning, and mental preparation.
- Exposure: Athletes will gain opportunities to be scouted for collegiate programs, with guidance on the recruitment process.
Mavericks Varsity will also continue the tradition of community involvement by connecting players with local schools, hosting camps, and partnering with businesses and sponsors to strengthen the future of baseball in southern Alberta.
