It’s Canada Day, and the Medicine Hat Mavericks are ready to rock their new Canada Day jerseys as they get set to take the field against the Weyburn Beavers. How fitting, Beavers, eh?

The Mavericks enter tonight on an all-time high after coming back from being down six runs to beat the Edmonton Prospects. They finished the month of June at 11 and 11 after sitting just three games above .500 at 15–12 overall.

The Beavers have been on a downward spiral as they have lost 10 straight games and are in the WCBL’s basement with a record of 7-20. They will look to hang a larry and travel back into the win column.

Keys for Medicine Hat

The Mavericks have found a new level these last three games, and even though they did not win them all, they battled till the end. Last night, their efforts paid off as they won 12-10 over the Edmonton Prospects.

Caesar, or rather Cesar Rodriguez, dominated on the mound in the 7th, 8th, and 9th, throwing darts left and right and keeping the scoreboard clean, which queued the Maverick’s comeback.

There isn’t one specific player on the hitting side that should be highlighted tonight, as you could choose any player on the roster and find a reason to speak highly of them. It seems as though the Mavericks bats have found their groove and, more importantly, found a way to put the ball where the opposition isn’t.

Their contact has been great all season, but they struggled with their direction. That problem seems to have been solved, and that’s going to be an issue for the rest of the WCBL.

Keys for Weyburn

As for the Beavers, well, things have been gloomy in Opportunity City. But as their nickname suggests, there will be plenty of opportunities for the Beavers to break their slump. They have had the Mavericks’s number so far this season; their last win came against the Mavericks when they crushed them at home 11-3.

Despite what their recent history shows, the Beavers confidence should be sky-high heading into tonight’s game, knowing they have the mental edge.

Look out for Niko Kekatos tonight, who carved up the Mavericks like a pumpkin in his last appearance at Athletic Park and will look to do the same tonight. He’s currently batting a team-best .369 with just a single home run to his name. He will keep the Mavs defenders on their toes tonight, and they will also have to pitch cautiously to him.

Bottom Line

Rain, rain, go away is what all hatters have been yelling out over the past couple of days. Tonight the weather remains an issue, with thundershowers expected just before game time. There is potential for this game to be pushed back, but until the first drop falls, 7:05 is still the planned first pitch.

Although it’s America’s pastime, the game of baseball will unite Canadians as we celebrate our country at Athletic Park!
