TRUMAN BARTMAN JULY 13TH THEMAVERICKS.CA

There aren’t a lot of words that can describe what transpired last night at Athletic Park. The term “no lead is ever safe” may be the only thing that could come close to putting it into words.

The Moose Jaw Miller Express looked well on their way to gaining another step on the Mavericks in the standings, holding an 8-run lead heading into the bottom of the 6th inning.

Leo Woods had just led the Mavericks out of a 0-out, bases-loaded jam to keep the Miller Express lead from becoming a blowout.

The Mavericks would score nine unanswered runs over the next three innings of play, all off of purely hitting the ball from coast to coast. They didn’t put one ball over the fence, which makes things that much more impressive.

A tense top of the 9th saw Adam Golby and company hold things together and pull off one of the most improbable comebacks in Mavericks history.

Keys for Medicine Hat

If things weren’t perfect enough before for the Mavericks, they get to face the Miller Express again tonight. A team they have continued to stun and have earned two crazy comebacks against in 2024.

Dylan Runge will take the mound for Medicine Hat at 7:05, hoping to have a repeat performance of his first start in a Mavs uniform.

Runge went six strong innings in Regina, only giving up three hits and one earned run. His fine work would be good enough to earn him the victory as well.

The Mavericks have no pressure as they head into today’s game and will look to get a strong lead in the first half, something they haven’t done a lot of, even though they have won a lot.

Keys for Moose Jaw

There isn’t a whole lot going on for the Miller Express at the moment. Without restating the obvious, they have now fallen three games behind Med Hat in the race for the second seed, and they have lost four straight games.

The big bats performed well last night, with Austin Gurney going 5 for 6 at the plate with 2 RBIs. That’s nothing out of the ordinary for Gurney, as once again he rakes in the gas city.

Nate Houston also had a pair of runs on two hits, showing his elite skills at the dish and doing exactly what was highlighted about him in yesterday’s pre-game article.

The only key to the Miller Express is to have a short memory. In the words of basketball legend Charles Barkley, “All the greats have short memories,” and if the Miller Express want to become great again, they need to play by that motto.

It will be an uphill battle for Moose Jaw all game long, but after what we saw just a night ago, anything is possible.

Bottom Line

It’s superhero night at Atheltic Park as we support Dominic Strong for Alberta Children’s Hospital. The Mavericks will be wearing custom Spiderman-themed uniforms, which will also be available for purchase at the Mavericks Team Store.

The Mavericks are ready to hunt down their six consecutive wins and push further away from the Millers.
