As the 2025 WCBL regular season winds down, the Mavericks prepare to host their final two regular-season home games of the summer as they get set to face the Swift Current 57s. Through their 6 meetings thus far, the Mavs took the first 5 games convincingly, and the 57s claimed victory in their most recent match.

A night ago, it was the Regina Red Sox whom the Mavericks claimed a pair of wins against with two electric starts from pitchers Xander Roberts and Gary Dornan. The odds of stealing both games in a doubleheader are slim, but the Mavs’ scrappy play helped them pull off a much-needed sweep of the Red Sox.

The Mavs’ two wins put them 7 games ahead of Regina, nearly securing them the second seed in the East Division. With less to play for playoff seeding-wise, the Mavericks will turn their attention to breaking last year’s win total, which sat at 33. The 2025 Mavs have already claimed 30 wins and will have 8 games left to try and squeeze out 4 more wins.

Swift Current stands in Medicine Hat’s way as the 57s will look to keep them from reaching an improved win total. The 57s will be super familiar with the Mavs by the end of next week, as they will play them 4 times in that span.

Two players that the WCBL has gotten used to watching play for the 57s are pitcher Adam Korte and reliever Jorge Maza Leone.

Korte has been a staple within the 57s rotation, working as their second-best arm in 2024 behind former ace Kenny Jinks. In 2025, Swift handed him the keys to their ace spot, and he hasn’t looked back. Korte carried one of the league’s best ERAs for a majority of the season and has been one of the few bright spots in the 57s rotation.

Maza Leone has provided 57s with a different kind of boost through his years of WCBL experience. The 4th-year journeyman reliever is currently in his second season with the 57s after two stops in Sylvan Lake and Brooks prior. Although his workload isn’t as high as when he pitched for the Bombers, Maza Leone has remained a solid option for Swift Current in 2025.

There’s a good chance that the Mavs could see either Korte or Maza Leone, but regardless of who they face on the mound, the task at hand remains the same.

Looking to play spoiler for the second straight game against the Mavericks, the Swift Current 57s are back in town with their sights set on snapping the Mavs 4-game winning streak.
