If you missed yesterday’s game at Athletic Park between the Medicine Hat Mavericks and Energy City Cactus Rats, you didn’t miss much. The game only lasted an inning and a half due to another aggressive rainstorm making its way through Medicine Hat. Things would end tied at zero apiece at the top of the 2nd, which leaves lots of uncertainty for today’s game.
Here’s what is known about how things will roll out Friday night at Athletic Park. In compliance with the WCBL’s rainout policy, Thursday night’s postponed game will take place at 5:00 PM ahead of Friday’s originally scheduled game, which will be moved to 7:00 PM (or at the conclusion of game 1). Last evening’s rescheduled game will start off right where we finished at the top of the 2nd with one out and a base runner aboard for Energy City, while Friday’s original game will run as a 7-inning game.
Now that the confusing parts are cleaned up, what does the Rats and Mavs matchup have in store? For starters, both Cody Myers and Matt Sevensma, who were featured on the mound for an inning, will likely miss today’s game, forcing both teams to rely on their depth.
Medicine Hat has a few pitchers on good rest who could be deployed at points throughout today’s doubleheader. Diego Centella, who was the Mavs’ long reliever in 2025, has transitioned into a starter role this summer and could easily start one of the two games, having last pitched on Friday, June 5th.
Julian Pokorny made his first Mavericks start a day later, on June 6th, in a winning effort. He could be another arm that factors into the Mavs’ two-game set alongside Centella.
It’s hard to say who Energy City will turn to on the mound, but what can be expected of the Cactus Rats is the presence of Steven Fermin and Seiji Umezawa in their lineup. Fermin has led off for the Rats in almost all of their games this season while also bagging 7 hits, the second-highest total on his team.
In Umezawa’s case, it’s not only what he provides when he’s at the plate but also when he’s lined up along the Rats’ infield. The smooth-throwing second baseman has adjusted well during his time in Energy City, and his stress-free defensive approach has proved to be an asset this year. Umezawa sits second on the Cactus Rats in assists and has orchestrated two double plays as well.
The weather’s reign on the WCBL in 2026 has continued to pester teams, and the Mavs are no exception. With that being said, be ready for lots of baseball this evening as the Cactus Rats are back at Athletic Park for a doubleheader against the Medicine Hat Mavericks.
